There are more Friends (Quakers) in Kenya than in the rest of the world combined. The violence that broke out after the recent failed elections has drastically affected Friends along with everybody else in the country.
The latest issue of Peacework magazine features interviews with several North American Friends working in hospitals, relief agencies and nonvilence training programs in Kenya about how ths violence has affected their work. One of the Friends interviewed is Eden Grace, a really dedicated New England Friend whose family had relocated to Kisumu a couple of years ago. An article from a Maine newspaper describes efforts by New England Friends to keep an orphanage/homeless shelter in Kisumu, one of the hardest-hit cities in the recent civil warfare, open and serving its child clients, many of whom are AIDS orphans.
