Shouting the Truth from a High Place

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Yesterday, I had the great privilege of hearing the 29-year-old Chinese-American mayor of Fitchburg Massachusetts, Lisa Wong, talk about her vision for the future of her old financially-strapped mill city. In her nine months as mayor, she has already had considerable success, reversing the municipal deficit and attracting a Canadian bookstore tot he downtown area. Her vision includes making Fitchburg a destination for extreme sports such as whitewater kayaking and bicycle racing, integrating the state college into the fabric of the city and reviving the city’s squares to  resemble the vibrant squares of Cambridge and Boston. One thing she did when she was preparing her vision was to go to the top of the tallest building in town and make a mental inventory of what she saw, without preconceptions. I hope to speak more about the details of her vision later, and there may be a video of the presentation at a later time, but today, I need to speak of the dream I had last night.

I was considering the image of the mayor looking down at her city and seeing its potential along with the remarkable events of the day in Washington DC, where lawmakers summoned the strength to reject an ill-conceived bailout plan and people of vision, such as Dennis Kucinich and Michael Moore were able to articulate their vision of a genuine rescue plan for the economy, one that would benefit all of us and open up a future worth having.

Last night, I dreamed I was in a town which was my home. A speaker was standing on the common saying what must have been inspiring words,, but I couldn’t make them out. Then Bob Hillegass, a Quaker who had been a great friend and teacher to me before his death several years ago, walked over to a nearby telephone pole, carrying a long ladder. He poised the ladder against the pole and slowly climbed to the top and begain proclaiming profound truths from the top of the ladder. His voice reached everybody in town. The ladder then slipped to the side and he fell, but I thought I heard him say “It’s OK, I’m already dead.”

During the latter part of his life, when I knew him, Bob always emphasized the connection between political action, civil disobedience, pacifism and Earth-care. He introduced me to the work of Brian Swimme and he loved to quote Wendell Barry. I couldn’t save the content of his speech in my waking mind, but I know that he was making the point that the present financial crisis was a great opportunity to do the right thing for Gaia, Mother Earth and all of us who live on/in her.

Instead of Bob’s or Lisa’s words, when I woke up I heard a voice singing the old Danish hymn “That Cause Can Neither be Lost nor Stayed”, which affirms that individual death is not an ending and that crises cause spurts of growth and creative energy to be released.
,,,
Each noble service that we have wrought
Was first conceived as a fruitful thought
Each worthy cause with a future glorious
By Quietly growing becomes victorious.

There by itself like a tree it shows
That high it reaches as deep it grows
And when the storms are its branches shaking
It deeper root in the soil is taking

Be then no more by a storm dismayed
For by it the full-grown seeds are laid
And though the tree by its might it shatters
What then, if thousands of seeds it scatters!

We won – More from Michael Moore

Once again a note I feel compelled to pass on from Michael Moore. Now that we’ve managed to stave off the ill-conceived Wall-street bailout plan for a while,  we need to push for something positive, and he’s promising to write again this afternoon. You might want to keep up by subscribing to his mailing list at

Friends,

Everyone said the bill would pass. The masters of the universe were already making celebratory dinner reservations at Manhattan’s finest restaurants. Personal shoppers in Dallas and Atlanta were dispatched to do the early Christmas gifting. Mad Men of Chicago and Miami were popping corks and toasting each other long before the morning latte run.

But what they didn’t know was that hundreds of thousands of Americans woke up yesterday morning and decided it was time for revolt. The politicians never saw it coming. Millions of phone calls and emails hit Congress so hard it was as if Marshall Dillon, Elliot Ness and Dog the Bounty Hunter had descended on D.C. to stop the looting and arrest the thieves.

The Corporate Crime of the Century was halted by a vote of 228 to 205. It was rare and historic; no one could remember a time when a bill supported by the president and the leadership of both parties went down in defeat. That just never happens.

A lot of people are wondering why the right wing of the Republican Party joined with the left wing of the Democratic Party in voting down the thievery. Forty percent of Democrats and two-thirds of Republicans voted against the bill.

Here’s what happened:

The presidential race may still be close in the polls, but the Congressional races are pointing toward a landslide for the Democrats. Few dispute the prediction that the Republicans are in for a whoopin’ on November 4th. Up to 30 Republican House seats could be lost in what would be a stunning repudiation of their agenda.

The Republican reps are so scared of losing their seats, when this “financial crisis” reared its head two weeks ago, they realized they had just been handed their one and only chance to separate themselves from Bush before the election, while doing something that would make them look like they were on the side of “the people.”

Watching C-Span yesterday morning was one of the best comedy shows I’d seen in ages. There they were, one Republican after another who had backed the war and sunk the country into record debt, who had voted to kill every regulation that would have kept Wall Street in check — there they were, now crying foul and standing up for the little guy! One after another, they stood at the microphone on the House floor and threw Bush under the bus, under the train (even though they had voted to kill off our nation’s trains, too), heck, they would’ve thrown him under the rising waters of the Lower Ninth Ward if they could’ve conjured up another hurricane. You know how your dog acts when sprayed by a skunk? He howls and runs around trying to shake it off, rubbing and rolling himself on every piece of your carpet, trying to get rid of the stench. That’s what it looked like on the Republican side of the aisle yesterday, and it was a sight to behold.

The 95 brave Dems who broke with Barney Frank and Chris Dodd were the real heroes, just like those few who stood up and voted against the war in October of 2002. Watch the remarks from yesterday of Reps. Marcy Kaptur, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Dennis Kucinich. They spoke the truth.

The Dems who voted for the giveaway did so mostly because they were scared by the threats of Wall Street, that if the rich didn’t get their handout, the market would go nuts and then it’s bye-bye stock-based pension and retirement funds.

And guess what? That’s exactly what Wall Street did! The largest, single-day drop in the Dow in the history of the New York Stock exchange. The news anchors last night screamed it out: Americans just lost 1.2 trillion dollars in the stock market!! It’s a financial Pearl Harbor! The sky is falling! Bird flu! Killer Bees!

Of course, sane people know that nobody “lost” anything yesterday, that stocks go up and down and this too shall pass because the rich will now buy low, hold, then sell off, then buy low again.

But for now, Wall Street and its propaganda arm (the networks and media it owns) will continue to try and scare the bejesus out of you. It will be harder to get a loan. Some people will lose their jobs. A weak nation of wimps won’t last long under this torture. Or will we? Is this our line in the sand?

Here’s my guess: The Democratic leadership in the House secretly hoped all along that this lousy bill would go down. With Bush’s proposals shredded, the Dems knew they could then write their own bill that favors the average American, not the upper 10% who were hoping for another kegger of gold.

So the ball is in the Democrats’ hands. The gun from Wall Street remains at their head. Before they make their next move, let me tell you what the media kept silent about while this bill was being debated:

1. The bailout bill had NO enforcement provisions for the so-called oversight group that was going to monitor Wall Street’s spending of the $700 billion;

2. It had NO penalties, fines or imprisonment for any executive who might steal any of the people’s money;

3. It did NOTHING to force banks and lenders to rewrite people’s mortgages to avoid foreclosures — this bill would not have stopped ONE foreclosure!;

4. It had NO teeth anywhere in the entire piece of legislation, using words like “suggested” when referring to the government being paid back for the bailout;

5. Over 200 economists wrote to Congress and said this bill might actually WORSEN the “financial crisis” and cause even MORE of a meltdown.

Put a fork in this slab of pork. It’s over. Now it is time for our side to state very clearly the laws WE want passed. I will send you my proposals later today. We’ve bought ourselves less than 72 hours.

Yours,
Michael Moore

Some Will Rob You With a Fountain Pen

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I mainly wanted to pass on  this message from filmmaker Michael Moore and second what he has to say. (also you can watch his new movie Slacker Uprising for free and remind yourself of how GW Bush and Co. stole the last two elections.

Friends,

Let me cut to the chase. The biggest robbery in the history of this country is taking place as you read this. Though no guns are being used, 300 million hostages are being taken. Make no mistake about it: After stealing a half trillion dollars to line the pockets of their war-profiteering backers for the past five years, after lining the pockets of their fellow oilmen to the tune of over a hundred billion dollars in just the last two years, Bush and his cronies — who must soon vacate the White House — are looting the U.S. Treasury of every dollar they can grab. They are swiping as much of the silverware as they can on their way out the door.

No matter what they say, no matter how many scare words they use, they are up to their old tricks of creating fear and confusion in order to make and keep themselves and the upper one percent filthy rich. Just read the first four paragraphs of the lead story in last Monday’s New York Times and you can see what the real deal is:

“Even as policy makers worked on details of a $700 billion bailout of the financial industry, Wall Street began looking for ways to profit from it.

“Financial firms were lobbying to have all manner of troubled investments covered, not just those related to mortgages.

“At the same time, investment firms were jockeying to oversee all the assets that Treasury plans to take off the books of financial institutions, a role that could earn them hundreds of millions of dollars a year in fees.

“Nobody wants to be left out of Treasury’s proposal to buy up bad assets of financial institutions.”

Unbelievable. Wall Street and its backers created this mess and now they are going to clean up like bandits. Even Rudy Giuliani is lobbying for his firm to be hired (and paid) to “consult” in the bailout.

The problem is, nobody truly knows what this “collapse” is all about. Even Treasury Secretary Paulson admitted he doesn’t know the exact amount that is needed (he just picked the $700 billion number out of his head!). The head of the congressional budget office said he can’t figure it out nor can he explain it to anyone.

And yet, they are screeching about how the end is near! Panic! Recession! The Great Depression! Y2K! Bird flu! Killer bees
! We must pass the bailout bill today!! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Falling for whom? NOTHING in this “bailout” package will lower the price of the gas you have to put in your car to get to work. NOTHING in this bill will protect you from losing your home. NOTHING in this bill will give you health insurance.

Health insurance? Mike, why are you bringing this up? What’s this got to do with the Wall Street collapse?

It has everything to do with it. This so-called “collapse” was triggered by the massive defaulting and foreclosures going on with people’s home mortgages. Do you know why so many Americans are losing their homes? To hear the Republicans describe it, it’s because too many working class idiots were given mortgages that they really couldn’t afford. Here’s the truth: The number one cause of people declaring bankruptcy is because of medical bills. Let me state this simply: If we had had universal health coverage, this mortgage “crisis” may never have happened.

This bailout’s mission is to protect the obscene amount of wealth that has been accumulated in the last eight years. It’s to protect the top shareholders who own and control corporate America. It’s to make sure their yachts and mansions and “way of life” go uninterrupted while the rest of America suffers and struggles to pay the bills. Let the rich suffer for once. Let them pay for the bailout. We are spending 400 million dollars a day on the war in Iraq. Let them end the war immediately and save us all another half-trillion dollars!

I have to stop writing this and you have to stop reading it. They are staging a financial coup this morning in our country. They are hoping Congress will act fast before they stop to think, before we have a chance to stop them ourselves. So stop reading this and do something — NOW! Here’s what you can do immediately:

1. Call or e-mail Senator Obama. Tell him he does not need to be sitting there trying to help prop up Bush and Cheney and the mess they’ve made. Tell him we know he has the smarts to slow this thing down and figure out what’s the best route to take. Tell him the rich have to pay for whatever help is offered. Use the leverage we have now to insist on a moratorium on home foreclosures, to insist on a move to universal health coverage, and tell him that we the people need to be in charge of the economic decisions that affect our lives, not the barons of Wall Street.

2. Take to the streets. Participate in one of the hundreds of quickly-called demonstrations that are taking place all over the country (especially those near Wall Street and DC).

3. Call your Representative in Congress and your Senators. (click here to find their phone numbers). Tell them what you told Senator Obama.

When you screw up in life, there is hell to pay. Each and every one of you reading this knows that basic lesson and has paid the consequences of your actions at some point. In this great democracy, we cannot let there be one set of rules for the vast majority of hard-working citizens, and another set of rules for the elite, who, when they screw up, are handed one more gift on a silver platter. No more! Not again!

Yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. Having read further the details of this bailout bill, you need to know you are being lied to. They talk about how they will prevent golden parachutes. It says NOTHING about what these executives and fat cats will make in SALARY. According to Rep. Brad Sherman of California, these top managers will continue to receive million-dollar-a-month paychecks under this new bill. There is no direct ownership given to the American people for the money being handed over. Foreign banks and investors will be allowed to receive billion-dollar handouts. A large chunk of this $700 billion is going to be given directly to Chinese and Middle Eastern banks. There is NO guarantee of ever seeing that money again.

P.P.S. From talking to people I know in DC, they say the reason so many Dems are behind this is because Wall Street this weekend put a gun to their heads and said either turn over the $700 billion or the first thing we’ll start blowing up are the pension funds and 401(k)s of your middle class constituents. The Dems are scared they may make good on their threat. But this is not the time to back down or act like the typical Democrat we have witnessed for the last eight years. The Dems handed a stolen election over to Bush. The Dems gave Bush the votes he needed to invade a sovereign country. Once they took over Congress in 2007, they refused to pull the plug on the war. And now they have been cowered into being accomplices in the crime of the century. You have to call them now and say “NO!” If we let them do this, just imagine how hard it will be to get anything good done when President Obama is in the White House. THESE DEMOCRATS ARE ONLY AS STRONG AS THE BACKBONE WE GIVE THEM. CALL CONGRESS NOW.

Hurricane Ike Devastates Western Cuba

Friday, September 12th, 2008

The city of Gibara on the western north coast of Cuba received an incredibly destructive blow from Hurricane Ike. Gibara is home to a Quaker Meeting that has a sister relationship with my home meeting Monadnock Meeting in New Hampshire. Now that some phone lines have been restored, Friends in Florida and New England are aghast at the scale of the destruction depicted in these photos and wondering how to respond. It is very difficult to send anything to Cuba, including humanitarian aid. The Meeting House in Holguin lost its roof, and the one in Puerto Padre was seriously damaged. We don’t know if any of the Friends we have visited or who have visited us were hurt. Cuba usually manages sheltering and evacuation for storms very well compared to the US, but this storm was unusually intense.

What to Do About Sarah Palin

Friday, September 12th, 2008

In a recent posting by my friend Bite Global Warming ,
he lamented the rise in John McCain’s polling numbers in that last week or so, which is being attributed to former Hillary Clinton supporters who are women switching to the  McCain/Palin ticket because it has a woman on it. He said that if women learn the political positions of Sarah Palin on issues that are key to women, they would never vote for her, since she is opposed to their interests and beliefs. I tend to think this is true, but some of the statements he made in his posting were not true. In my respone to the posting, I said:

I recently made the mistake of repeating a rumor about Palin which was not true (or at least could not be proven), and I regret it. I hope we stick to the facts from now on, which are bad enough. For example, her fabrications regarding the “Bridge to Nowhere” issue are not a feminist issue, but they are a matter of record and they call her character into question.

Visit factcheck.org for more info, but

1. Palin has never been a MEMBER of the Alaska Independence Party, and I can’t find any record of her having gone on the record “supporting” them.

2. She may BELIEVE that women who have abortions are murderers, but she is not on record as having said so explicitly. She is in favor of banning all abortions except to save the life of the mother, and she does favor the death penalty for anyone who murders a child (if she does indeed construe “child” as including fetuses, this implies that she does want to execute women who have abortions for murder, but again the connection is not made explicit).

3. She may be a creationist, but she equivocates about how whether creationism should be mandated to be taught in the public schools.

She DOES want Roe vs. Wade overturned. She came pretty close to stating the her daughter would not be allowed to have an abortion if she wanted to, but she used the language of “choosing life” rather than the language of “coerced childbearing”. Interestingly, she seemed to demand that the boy that got her daughter pregnant become her “fiance” and marry her forthwith, but again, the way she said these things leaves her meaning open to question.

She does support shooting wolves from aircraft.

She fought fiercely to see to it that polar bears were not listed as endangered, but her rationale, to the New York Times at least, was not that polar bear protection gets in the way of oil drilling or that Global Warming is a false myth, but that the Alaska north slope polar bear population has recently increased. (this is a half-truth, since the ocean, and not the land, is where polar bears seem to be dying off, and it would make sense that polar bears would be moving from the ice to the land if the ice is melting.) There is plenty of indirect evidence that she denies global warming is real or is human-caused and that she prioritizes oil-drilling over environmental protection, but she is not on the record as stating these things explicitly.

I think that Palin is probably what would loosely be called a political prevaricator, though in many cases the falsehoods she promotes are not made explicit and can later be denied. Her stated views on most subjects are so far from mine (and Hillary Clinton’s for that matter) that I find it incredible that women who backed Hillary Clinton on the issues could switch allegiance, as the polls seem to imply they have.

I think the best approach to deflating the Palin bubble is to refer to the issues where she has gone on record most distinctly and use them to highlight her questionable judgement and character. For example, Democrats.com is correctly and persuasively stating,  “It is now thoroughly documented that Sarah Palin supported the $398 million “Bridge to Nowhere” when she ran for Governor in 2006, even though Congress cancelled the earmark in 2005. She only opposed it in September 2007 after her final efforts to get $329 million more from Congress failed. Yet she kept the partial funding from Congress! So when Palin repeatedly says ‘I told Congress, ‘Thanks, but no thanks’ on that bridge to nowhere,’ she is repeatedly lying.” The controversies over the vindictive and political firings of municipal and state personnel are also well documented, and they show that her character is abysmal.

But maybe facts are not enough. Maybe some ad-hominem (or is it ad-feminem) attacks on her appearance, her lifestyle, and her positions would be politically effective. Something like the stroke of genius that launched The Smirking Chimp
when it was discoverd that George W Bush had an uncanny resemblance to a diffident simian. I noticed the other day that Sarah Palin resembles Robin Williams as Tootsie… perhaps that could be used as a metaphor for “appearances can be deceiving”. It has been used politcally before. There also exist some disgusting photographs of Palin engaged in big-game hunting  and in the celebratory culture that surrounds it, which I think would disgust many women and men if they were more widely circulated.

A friend in New Hampshire is also lamenting the fact that the Republicans are crafting  images for obnoxious conservative female candidates that mirror the Palin image:  For example the Republican challenger to progressive NH congressman Paul Hodes is Jennifer Horn… watch out for the deluge of lies and half-truths in the media  about what she stands for!

Shape Note

Monday, September 8th, 2008

If you’re at all interested in Shape Note or Sacred Harp singing, (or especially if you’ve never heard of them before :) ), there’s a great new documentary film available to watch for free for one week only at http://pitchfork.tv/week/awake-my-soul-the-story-of-the-sacred-harp.

I love participating in this genuine community-based singing, though the theology expressed in the traditional shapenote tunes is not mine. You can find out most everything about it at http://fasola.org/. It’s a-cappella roots music that has inspired some psych-folk musicians (Jolie Holland, and The Incredible String Band to name a couple), and there are young people still writing new songs (some secular) for the genre.

If you live in my area, the  33rd Annual New England SACRED HARP SINGING CONVENTION is coming up on
Saturday and Sunday, October 4-5, 2008at the Town Hall at the town hall in Walpole NH. For more information and updates go to: http://www.neconvention.net/  or contact:  Matt Wojcik, (mwojcik “at” earthlink.net 802-246-1008)

Patty Keough and Buffie Groves

Monday, September 8th, 2008

A couple of weeks ago Denise and I got to see Patty Keough (http://www.myspace.com/pattykeoughwatching) and Buffie Groves play at the Stagecoach Inn (http://www.grotonstagecoachinn.com/live_music.htm) in Groton, Massachusetts, not far from where we live.
I’ve been meaning to write something about  this delightful show but days have gone by and I never seem to sit down and do it, so here goes:

We got there a little early and had the pleasure of chatting with Patty and Buffie as they set up their mikes and adjusted the sound. They broke into a spontaneous song about setting up the mikes and we joined in. Patty has just had an operation on her hand and is getting back to serious guitar playing. She has wanted to perform with her friend Buffie  for many years, but this was their first joint performance. I hope there will be many others.

Buffie Groves is an amazing guitaritst and a singer whose voice and delivery mesmerize. She has “reverse-engineered ” the guitar styles of the best artists who were playing in the early 1970′s and made them her own. She works in many different tunings and is such a fine finger-picker that I kept looking over at her guitar to make sure it wasn’t a twelve-string.. so pronounced was the ringing quality of the notes. While Patty writes songs, Buffie has specialized in interpreting other people’s work. The two joked that Buffie is always the second name on the bill:: Fishken and Groves (http://www.fishkenandgroves.com) and now Keough and Groves.

A party of people from the Groton High School class of 1951 were singing around the piano in the bar when we came in, but the acoustics of the old inn allowed for two modest musical activities to happen at the same time without interfering with each other. Slowly people trickled in, including some folks who had heard Patty at her previous gig in New Salem.

The set started out with Buffie playing and harmonizing with Patty on some of Patty’s own songs. Then each took a turn doing some solos. Buffie did some great renditions of Joni Mitchell songs and the two of them put together fine renditions of Simon and Garfunkel. Patty made us all laugh with her “I Love The Boys” song. Buffie sang one song in an unusual tuning that just took my breath away, but whose name and author I can’t recall.

I hope these two can perform together lots more times. Many more people deserve to have this treat!

The Stagecoach Inn is a historic building with guest rooms, bar and restaurant. The listening room, which is separated from the main dining room and the bar, seats maybe 35 people at tables. The food is standard american beef-based cuisine with a little Greek food thrown in. The only drinks available are alcoholic bar drinks and mass-marketed carbonated drinks (and coffee if you ask politely). As a vegetarian, I found little to interest me on the menu. We could have chosen spanakopeta or greek salad, but instead we opted for desserts and coffee, and the variety and quality of desserts was quite good. The waitress and bartender were wonderful, and I think the staff took a liking to Patty and Buffie and will invite them back again soon.

Leaked Iraq-US Withdrawal Agreement

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) just posted the leaked text of an agreement that is near finalization between the US and Iraq. Offhand it looks like mostly bad news. US troops will remain in place indefinitely with no requirement that they behave according to Iraqi law. We’ve got to get up to speed on this and start contacting our elected representatives and presidential candidates. The text of the agreement is at:
http://www.afsc.org/Iraq/

Highlights (or perhaps lowlights) are:

1. Withdrawal of troops: Combat troops only.
2. Permanent bases with US troop presence indefinitely.
3. Full immunity from arrest, detention, or legal accountability for actions by U.S. troops and contractors inside and outside U.S. bases.
4. Will take effect when  “diplomatic memos confirming all constitutional procedures have been met in both countries are exchanged” upon proper parliamentary approval.

Countering Political Disinformation

Friday, September 5th, 2008

You will be talking with friends and neighbors and co-workers about the election and maybe about impeachment and the need for radical change in the US political system a whole lot in the next couple of months. You will want to base your conversations on facts as well as opinions.

All the candidates and their spokespersons have been telling lies and half truths in the interest of getting categories of voters on their side. The lies and half-truths will continue. Differences of opinion are one thing, but character assassination and outright lies are quite another. To instantly find out the facts about statements politicians are making, you can go to Politifact.com (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/personalities/). Click on the name of the candidate or other political personality, and you can see a list of statements they have recently made, how true or false the statements are, and links to news stories and reference materials that give you the actual facts.Republicans aren’t the only ones lying, though I tend to think they do so more consistently (Politifact may even enable us to quantify these judgements :) ), but Democrats do it too, and probably even Nader, the Greens and the Libertarians.

Maybe even more important is to keep up with the events and opinions that are not front-and-center for the network TV cameras, but which have great political significance. For coverage of the 800 arrests so far at the RNC, the nationally-coordinated and funded militarization of  the police, the great anti-war (etc.) organizing that has been going on (for example. four Code Pink and Iraq Veterans Against the War members infiltrated the hall and interrupted McCain’s speech, causing the delegates to go into chants of U-S-A U-S-A to drown out thier messages), the targetting of journalists along with peaceful protestors by police, the latest suppression of union organizing.. Keep checking in at Pacifica’s election411.org and Democracy Now to keep up with the fast-moving developments.

Journalists unlawfully arrested in Minn,

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

I just came home from a delightful Bread & Roses Festival in Lawrence MA, where Rosalie Sorrells sang, to hear the news that Democracy Now host and producer Amy Goodman and much of her staff has been arrested and apparently charged with terrorism in Minnesota while covering the GOP convention. These are reporters with credentials doing their job! The police in that state are violating the constitution with impunity. This must be stopped! visit http://www.election411.org or http://www.democracynow.org for up-to-the-minute details and ways to take action. Here is Democracy Now’s press release, which includes a link to a video of Amy Goodman’s arrest.
